Online Shobogenzo

The Soto Zen Text Project

The Soto Zen Text Project is an initiative of the International Division of the Administrative Headquarters of Soto Zen Buddhism (Sotoshu Shumucho) that seeks to provide materials for the international study and practice of Soto Zen.

The project was formally launched in 1996, with the establishment of an Editorial Board made of up of scholars and Sotoshu representatives from Japan and America.

Under the direction of the Board, a team of translators has begun work on English translations of the major texts of Soto liturgy, ritual, and doctrine. As this work is completed, the translations will be made available to the public in both printed and electronic forms.

Shasta Abby

We are very happy to announce the completion of our 14 year project to produce a full translation of Zen Master Dogen's Shobogenzo. This translation is offered in memory of our late master, Rev. Roshi Jiyu-Kennett, and is given to the world as a dana offering. The book is available for downloading at our website, WWW.SHASTAABBEY.ORG. Look for the thumbnail of the cover on the left side of the screen on our home page and just follow the links. You can download the whole book at once ,or do so chapter by chapter. The book is in PDF format and it downloads in less than one minute if you have a fast Internet connection.
This is our first ebook and it will inevitably need some improvements, so please feel free to contact us if you have any suggestions on how it might be improved. Because it is offered in the spirit of dana, we hope you will feel inspired to mention it to colleagues, students, friends, and anyone else who might be interested in, or gain benefit from, Dogen's teaching.
There is no such thing as a perfect translation, so we hope that you will find this to be a helpful addition to your Dogen library and will enrich your teaching and training projects.
The gift of Truth exceeds all other gifts. May you all be well, happy, and peaceful.
